Answering A Traffic Ticket In Broome County
Motorists charged with a non-misdemeanor traffic offense in Broome County have three options:
1. Eligible motorists may participate in the Broome County Traffic Diversion Program. Upon successful completion of the Traffic Diversion Program all tickets are dismissed, there is no fine, no record of conviction, and no points on a motorist's license;
2. Motorists may plead guilty as charged to all charges they are facing. A judge will then determine what fines are to be imposed. This option will result in a record of conviction, possible points, and possible insurance ramifications (see below);
3. Motorists may plead not guilty and appear (either in person or by hiring an attorney) at a scheduled conference date at the court where they are charged. At that conference date a motorist has the right to request a trial, which will then be scheduled at a subsequent date. Motorists will also have the oppportunity at a conference date to discuss the case with an Assistant District Attorney.
Please note that the Broome County District Attorney's Office is unable to discuss traffic dispositions over the phone as we simply do not have sufficient staff to handle the volume of calls that would result. If you wish to speak to an Assistant District Attorney concerning your case, you will have to personally appear at your scheduled court conference date to do so, or you will have to hire an attorney who can appear for you.
